4.2 EQ Eight 2: The Frequency Spectrum

In the last lesson, I expressed that in many ways learning to use EQ effectively comes down to learning how to listen. I remember early on, listening to my unfinished mixes, I would be overwhelmed and when I'd listen to the entirety of the mix I would have no idea where to start. As I got better and better at knowing what to listen for, the effects I needed to apply became more and more obvious. As a mixing engineer, learning to listen in an analytical way can inform each step you take from raw tracks to a finished mix. Now when it comes to EQ, Ableton included a very useful tool in EQ Eight: The Spectrum Analyzer. This one feature, once you learn what it does and how to use it will be a constant companion as you get better and better at mixing. Lets take a look at the spectrum analyzer inside of EQ Eight.
